‘MAILBLOX’ & ‘INFINITY PORTAL’ | 2022 COMMONWEALTH GAMES | BIRMINGHAM

This installation responds to the nature of an underpass as a liminal space, occupying a position at, or on both sides of, a boundary or threshold. This installation creates a gateway beyond this world and into the multiverse, transcending the physical limitations of space and form. The endless reflections of the Infinity Portal create the illusion of a boundless universe.

Inspired by the disparate architectural styles of Birmingham, where different forms and materials share physical space with each other. The Mailblox adapts the negative space beneath the underpass columns to ‘complete’ the form. The name of the piece and the diagonal forms (inspired by the shape of envelopes) refer to the neighbouring Mailbox Birmingham, the UK’s largest mixed-use destination outside of London.
